[edit] Q. Why are you charging for API access?

A. We needed a way to gate the number of users utilizing our stats API. The best way for us to do that is to bundle it with Bungie Pro.

[edit] Q. So, if I already have Bungie Pro, I have access to the API?

A. Yes, but unless you’re a software developer, it won’t be of much use to you.

[edit] Q. Neat, another way to nickel and dime your loyal fanbase!

A. Actually, if you’re not planning on developing a free stats application using the API, we’d prefer it if you didn’t buy Bungie Pro to gain access. For most people, Bungie Pro is a great way to share their in game content and rendered videos. Only developers should be purchasing Bungie Pro to access the API.

[edit] Q. Can I sell applications I develop using your API?

A. No. The API and all relevant related data are provided via a public licensing agreement offered by Microsoft. Similar to rules governing machinima, you can only use our game content within the confines of that agreement. If you develop an application for profit, you should expect to hear from Microsoft’s lawyers.

[edit] Q. What if I’m only an aspiring developer?

A. Perfect! We have this public group right here on Bungie.net to facilitate discussion about the API. Stop by and maybe you can learn some great tips and tricks and get some good experience building sweet stats apps! Play nice!

[edit] Q. Is this API platform specific? Can I use it to make an iPhone app?

A. The API is simply an interface. It can be used to package and display our public data on any platform you can make it work on.

[edit] Q. So, if I buy Bungie Pro, I’m paying for access to that data feed and interface?

A. Not exactly. You’re paying to license the API. The data feed is conditional and reliant on a number of factors, including bandwidth and performance. We reserve the right to terminate the feed at any time.

[edit] Q. Wait, so I can’t store any of this data? What does that mean, exactly?

A. As long as you are operating under our Terms of Use, you can temporarily save files and statistics that have been made freely available through our API. Use of the API and any data we provide does not imply ownership or grant you permanent storage rights.
